Equine Reproduction Center

Shallowmyre is planning to set up a reproduction center here in Skamokawa, Daria has been involved with equine reproduction for many, many years.

Daria has received certificates from two Equine Reproduction short courses, including Oregon State University, which is patterened after and comparable to the reproduction course at Colorado State University. Daria has collected semen, ultrasounded and inseminated our own herd since 2001. She has also attempted two embryo transfers. She continues to educate herself in equine reproduction due to her interest in it, and her involvement with Hackney Horses, considered an endangered breed. She has especially focused on older mares and stallions, with even more rare bloodlines.

Of special interest are the less fertile mares, and have included a 19 year old maiden mare with only one ovary. The mare was also inclined to have non-ovulatory follicles, but Daria eventually was able to produce two exceptional foals from her. On her own, and much to the amazment and pleasure of her vet, Daria has also been able to detect twins twice by early ultrasound. One set was reduced by her vet (while he gave instructions on how to do it herself the next time) and one set which was too close to pinch off  was followed by ultrasound daily, showing evidence of self reducing by 35 days, and fully self reducing to one by 42 days, thus avoiding terminating the entire pregnancy.

Across the nation, much of the today's equine breeding management is done by veterinarians. An experienced reproduction veterianarian can be the most valuable resource a breeder can have and some aspects of equine reproduction are relegated to the veterinarian due to legal requirments, varying by state. However, there is much involved in routine equine reproduction that can be done by an experienced layman, thus keeping our veterinarians free to service our industry in ways others can't. To that end, Shallowmyre plans to offer collection, preparation and shipping of semen, and basic insemination of the mare with an eye to keep production costs lowered. We will also offer live cover services for those stallion owners that are not set up to do so at their home locations, and for breeds that don't allow, or charge extra fees for shipped semen breedings.

Our ultimate goal is to become a USDA certified collection point for overseas shipping of frozen semen, as there are none in Washington or Idaho, and only two in Oregon.
