A Bit of the History of Shallowmyre...
Shallowmyre, a private breeding farm, is interested in helping preserve the Hackney Horse for future generations, and for the enjoyment of todays discriminating horse owner. Owned by Paul and Daria Lacy, Shallowmyre has recently re-located to nearly 90 acres in a beautiful valley just off the Columbia River, outside of sleepy little Skamokawa, in Wahkiakum County, Washington.
I am Daria, and I've have been breeding quality, family horses for over three decades. I am greatfully supported in my current endeavors by my husband, Paul Lacy.
Over the past decades I've combined the blood of the Arabian horse with individuals of various breeds with excellent conformation, disposition, and special traits that I felt enhanced the Arabian, and have produced quality rather than quantity.
My equine history with horses began as a 4 year old when my Grandma Fran purchased a shetland pony for her grandkids. After expanding out to the neighbors ponies, my childhood dream of my own horse came true when Grandma Fran helped me purchase the great red dun mare, Imnaha Angel, an unregistered, but purebred Quarter Horse mare of cutting horse lines. Many years of 4-H, trail riding, parades, and just about everything that can be done with a horse followed.
My first expedition into breeding came with the opportunity to breed Angel to an Arabian stallion owned by one of of my 4-H club member's family. Bred to Ibn Potif, Angel produced a lovely dun filly, Arabasque (which means Arab-like). Soon after her birth, my Mom started calling the lovely youngster "Filly Babe." Filly Babe remained with me through out her life, providing me, my sister Angie and many others with a 4-H mount throught the years, culminating her peformance career at 24 by helping me earn the title of Equestrian Champion at the 30 Year Celebration of the Society for Creative Anachronism. I sadly let her go at the ripe old age of nearly 32 years old on New Year's Eve morning, December 31, 2002.
Over the years I have bred mostly Arabian related horses, combining quality bloodlines such as Comar Bay Beau, The Egyptian Prince and many others, with my primary focus on good temperment supported by quality conformation, topped off by beauty.
The current herd at Shallowmyre includes pure and partbred Hackney Horses, Arabians and Andalusians, as well as other minor breeds.
While introducing the blood of the Andalusian into our mare band, using the fine Spanish stallion, Magno T, and researching the history of the Andalusian, we discovered a fitting term for this type of horse ... Baroque-Style. A baroque-style horse is one comprised of one or more breeds of light horse exhibiting a conformation type that allows them to elevate their front end, drive under with their rear end, and collect themselves into a mass of energy that can perform such manuvres as high school dressage, so popular during the Baroque period. Light horse breeds such as the Andalusian, Lusitano, Arabian, Morgan, Saddlebred, and Hackney Horse, as well as others, fall into this category.
My first harness "horse" was a wonderful ex-fine harness Shetland pony mare, Too Much Turquoise. Then we chanced upon a Hackney Horse mare, Meadowvale Amber's McBeth, at a carriage auction. Unprepared to purchase a horse that day, we regretfully sat on our hands. There were few horse buyers, and the mare returned home to Reno, NV, with her owners. Unable to get her out of his mind, Paul traced her down about two months later, and this wonderful old matron came to grace our barn and pastures. We've been sold on the Hackney Horse ever since.
During a futile search to find a Hackney Horse stallion to breed her to, we found out what a unusual breed the Hackney is, actually listed as an Endangered Breed by the American Livestock Breeders Conservancy. Unable at that time to find a HH stallion in our area, we outcrossed "Ma'am" twice for wonderful colts. The oldest, Kriegstreiber, by the Andalusian, Magno T, was crowned National Champion Sr. Half Andalusian Stallion and Half Andalusian Best Movement at the 1998 Andalusian National Show in Ft. Worth, Texas. We hope similar successes will come to his maternal half brother, SM Gambit, who is by our Arabian stallion, HT Mardi Gras.
Because of the rarity of the Hackney, we felt guilty not breeding Ma'am to produce more of this wonderful breed. After a thorough search of purebred stallions that offered shipped semen, we chose Hallmandale Amber's Pride and gave this method a valiant try, but unfortunately, at 24, Ma'am did not settle. Additional plans to get Ma'am in foal brought the young stallion Maple Hill Canadance (Mikey) to our farm on a one year lease from Panache Sport Horses (PSH) of Arroyo Grande, California. Folowing the lease of Mikey, Sandra Singleton-Williams (of PSH) kindly sent Hallmandale Amber's Pride (JR) up to try to get Ma'am settled by live cover.
Unfortunately, Ma'am never conceived again, and with her health failing, she was put to rest at the age of 29 in the fall of 2003.
But JR has remained, and become one of our family.
We are pleased that Panache Sport Horses has honored us by allowing us to stand, Hallmandale Amber's Pride, and for allowing us to have half interest in this important stallion. We have been rewarded with several lovely offspring of this magnificent stallion. Hackney's that we feel will greatly add to the preservation of this fantastic breed.
"JR" is also an International Arabian Horse Sweepstakes nominated stallion, with offspring competing successfully in the Arabian show ring
We continue to breed Hackney Horses, ponies and crossbreds and usually have select individuals for sale to the discriminating buyer..
Thanks for taking the time to learn a little bit about Shallowmyre and our program. We hope you enjoy our website, and hope you will take the time to visit us in person if you're ever in our "neck of the woods."
Sincerely,
Daria and Paul Lacy
